Powerful Names Of God

In ancient times a name was meant for more than to just differentiate one person from the other. It was a way of describing ones character and attributes. Throughout the Bible we can see God manifest himself in powerful ways but it is impossible to describe who God is with just one name. There are many names that are used to characterize who God is. Below we will go through 25 powerful names of God.

1. Yahweh: I am (Exodus 3:14-15)

And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.

The eternal God who was, who is and will always be. He has no beginning and no end. When we pray to Yahweh we are praying to the one and only God who has always been there, is there and will always be there for us.

2. Elohim: The Creator (Genesis 1:1)

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Found in the very beginning of the bible we can see the power that God holds with just His word. God spoke and it was created. Ask God to create in you a pure heart and that His will may be done in your life.

3. El Shaddai: God Almighty (Genesis 17: 1-2)

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless. And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.”

The Almighty God promised Abram to make an entire nation out of his decedents and we see that God came through with his promise. God is Almighty and powerful and there is nothing that he can’t do.

4. Adonai: My Lord, My Master (Psalms 97:1)

The Lord reigns; Let the earth rejoice; Let the multitude of isles be glad!

God is our Master, our Lord and he desires our submission. When we submit to him he takes control of our lives and transforms us to glorify Himself in us. Adonai appears in the bible approximately 450 times.

5. Yahweh-Jireh: The Lord Will Provide (Genesis 22:13, 14)

Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

God is our provider. He can provide for all of our needs weather that be financial, emotional, spiritual, we just have to declare Yahweh-Jireh in our lives.

6. Yahweh-Rapha: The Lord Is Our Healer (Exodus 15:26)

“If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.”

God is our ultimate healer. When our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ died on the cross he carried with him all of our pain and sickness. He carried our physical pain and also our emotional pain. Yahweh-Rapha wants to set us free from anything that is hurting us.

After the victory, the Lord instructed Moses, “Write this down on a scroll as a permanent reminder, and read it aloud to Joshua: I will erase the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” Moses built an altar there and named it Yahweh-Nissi (which means “the Lord is my banner”).

Amalek declared war against Gods chosen people but he did not win. The Israelites defeated Amalek and lifted a banner as a sign of their victory. If we have God on our side we can lift banners and declare victory in our lives because God has already won our battles.

8. Yahweh-Mekaddesh: The Lord Who Sanctifies (Leviticus 20:7,8)

Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am the Lord your God.  And you shall keep My statutes, and perform them: I am the Lord who sanctifies you.

God is holy and he wants us to be holy. He has sanctified us and cleansed us of our sins but we have to strive everyday for holiness. As imperfect human beings it is impossible for is to sanctify ourselves, that is why we need to seek God daily and ask him to cleanse us each and every day.

9. Yahweh-Shalom: The Lord Is Peace (Judges 6:24)

So Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and called it The-Lord-Is-Peace. To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

In this life we are going to face many hard times but God promises to give us His peace. The bible says that His peace surpasses all understanding and it will guard our hearts and our minds. Trust the Lord during difficult times and ask him to fill you with His peace.

10. Yahweh-Tsidkenu: The Lord Our Righteousness (Jeremiah 23:5,6)

“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, and execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell safely; Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

God is righteous and just. He knows that we constantly fail and he intervenes for us everyday because his love for is is to great.

11. Yahweh-Rohi: The Lord Is My Shepherd (Psalms 23:1)

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

The Lord is the good Shepherd that tends to his flock (us). Sheep have the tendency to go astray and wander off and that is when they are in great danger of being killed or lost. They depend on their shepherd because they are helpless creatures. We depend on God as our shepherd because, just like sheep, also tend to go astray and are helpless without him.

12. Yahweh- Shamma: The Lord Is There (Ezekiel 48:35)

All the way around shall be eighteen thousand cubits; and the name of the city from that day shall be: THE LORD IS THERE.”

God is always with us. He is there when we are happy. He is there when we are sad. He is there even when we feel him so far away or not even there at all. God has always been there and will always be there. No matter the circumstances that we might be facing, God has never left our side.

13. Yahweh-Sabaoth: The Lord Of Armies or The Lord Of Hosts (Psalms 46:7)

The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge.

God has an army of soldiers that fight for us in the spiritual realm. When Satan and his armies rise against us, God’s great armies also rise and fight for us. Remember that we as christians always fight our battles on our knees in prayer and worship and we let God do the rest.

14. Yahweh-Selah: The Lord My Rock (Psalms 18:2)

The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.

The Lord Jesus Christ is our Rock and in him we are safe from all the attacks of the enemy. God should be the foundation for everything we build, for example our marriage, family, friendships, finances.

15. El Elyon: The Lord Most High (Psalms 7:17)

I will praise the Lord according to His righteousness, and will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.

There is no other like our God! The Lord Most High is powerful in battle yet loving and compassionate. He created everything for his purpose and his glory. God created you and me so that we may make a difference in this world and bring others to him so they can experience El Elyon in their lives.

16. El Roi: The God Who Sees Me (Genesis 16:13,14)

Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the Lord, who had spoken to her. She said, “You are the God who sees me. “She also said, “Have I truly seen the One who sees me?”  So that well was named Beer-lahai-roi (which means “well of the Living One who sees me”). It can still be found between Kadesh and Bered.

God sees us and he sees our situation. He knows when we are hurting and is always there for us. He is omnipresent and there is not a single thing that happens on this earth that he doesn’t know about.

17. El Olam: The Everlasting God or The Eternal God (Genesis 21:33)

Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba, and there he worshiped the Lord, the Eternal God.

God is eternal. He has no beginning and no end. He will never abandon us or forsake us. Gods love is eternal and there is nothing that can separate us from him love.

18. El Gibor: Mighty God (Isaiah 9:6)

For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

This bible verse prophesizes about Jesus Christ. Jesus is a Mighty God. He defeated death on the cross and it is through his death on the cross that we can have eternal life.

19. Elohay Mishpat: The God Of Justice (Isaiah 30:18)

Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!

God’s justice is better than mans justice. If someone wrongs us we sometimes want to take justice into our own hands but it is bet to let God be in control. When someone rises up against one of God’s children they are rising up against God himself and it is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God (Hebrews 10:31). So lets let God fight our battles and take justice into his own hands.

20. Elohay Selichot: God of Forgiveness (Psalms 130:4)

But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you.

God truly is a God of compassion and forgiveness. If we sin against God and repent and ask him with all of our heart to forgive us I can assure you 100% that he will extend his forgiveness. God also wants us to forgive others just like he forgave us.

21. Elohay Mikarov: God Who Is Near (Jeremiah 23:23)

“Am I only a God nearby,” declares the Lord, “and not a God far away?

There are times when we are going to feel God so far away but he is always near. We need to trust him the most in those times because that is when he is the closest. I’m reminded of the poem Footprints in the Sand that I will link here. It says that God carries us through the darkest moments of our lives.

22. Elohay Tehilati: God Of My Praise (Psalms 109:1)

Do not keep silent ,O God of my praise!

God is great and worthy to be praised! Praising God can change your whole mood. Psalms 150:6 says that everything that has breath praise the Lord. If we are breathing and living we need to praise him because it is because of God the we wake up every morning.

23. Elohay Yishi: God Of My Salvation (Psalms 25:5)

Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; on You I wait all the day.

Its is through the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made on the cross for you and me the we now have this beautiful salvation. We did not deserve it but God’s love for us is so great that he gave his son to die for us so that we may live eternally with him ,

24. El HaNe’eman: The Faithful God (Deuteronomy 7:9)

“Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments

God is faithful! Man will fail us, our loved ones will fail us, but God will never fail us.

25. Immanuel: God With Us (Matthew 1:23)

“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

Jesus left his throne and came to this earth as a man to die for our sins. His death on the cross was the only way mankind could receive salvation. Even though Jesus is not here physically he is always here spiritually. And thanks to his sacrifice on the cross we can say: God with us!

We serve such a Powerful God and He manifests Himself in our lives each and every day. God’s love for us is so great that we can freely declare each and every one of his names in our lives.
